University of the Philippines Cebu College

The University of the Philippines-Cebu College, formerly called the University of the Philippines College Cebu, is the oldest regional unit of the University of the Philippines (UP) system. It was founded in 1918 as a junior college, ten years after the University of the Philippines was founded in 1908.
Originally located in Leon Kilat Street, the college currently occupies a 12-hectare site along Gorordo Avenue which was donated by the Cebu Provincial Government in 1929. The main structure, currently an administration building, was built by Engineer Agustin Jereza in the 1930s. It was occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.
In the 1950s, UP-Cebu encountered financial difficulties and was eventually closed down for almost ten years until it reopened in 1963. During the time that it was closed, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) took over the site and operated a school named Berchman’s College.
In 1979 UP-Cebu was merged with UP-Iloilo and UP-Tacloban to form the University of the Philippines-Visayas which would be based in Miagao, Iloilo.
