Monument to Judge Carlock

Published by

Lyman Judy Carlock was the first American judge of Cebu. Born in 1868 near Bloomington, Illinois, USA, he went to the Philippines as judge of the Court of First Instance. Then Governor-General William Howard Taft urged him to transfer to Manila but he declined and chose to stay in Cebu. While holding court in Bohol, he contracted Asiatic cholera and eventually died on April 20, 1903. Unknown to him, he was elevated to the Supreme Court on the very date of his death. He was buried at the United States Army Cemetery in Cebu.

For his achievements, the City of Cebu renamed what was then Plaza Zapino to Carlock Plaza and an imposing monument made of marble was erected at the center to his honor.

I have always wondered for whose honor this was erected. Thanks for giving the answer. I thought this was the one which once was standing where the Heritage monument is now.

Judge Carlock was my Great Grandfather – I knew of this monument from old photos, and always wondered if it was still standing. Maybe someday I will be able to visit there.
