Bank of the Philippine Islands

Published by

The Bank of the Philippine Islands – Cebu Main branch building in Plaza Sugbo is a pre-war structure made of solid reinforced concrete. Designed by Architect Juan Arellano and built by Engineer Agustin Jereza in 1940, the building occupies a prime property that used to be a part of the plaza of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

During the second World War, the Japanese Imperial Army occupied the building. Damaged and burned during the aerial bombings conducted by the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), it was eventually restored. The same bank still operates in this building today.

The building is a national historical landmark and houses a museum.
